What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a division of dentistry that treats problems in tooth position like crowding or problems in the position of the upper teeth in relation to the lower teeth.

Most orthodontic problems are hereditary, where genetic issues such as crowding, spacing, protrusion, extra or missing teeth can be seen in children whose parents also had these problems. Problems in the airway such as sleep apnea, mouth breathing, or allergies can also strongly influence how the teeth and jaws develop, and lead to the formation of a dysfunctional bite.

Problems in the airway such as sleep apnea, mouth breathing, or allergies can also strongly influence how the teeth and jaws develop, and lead to the formation of a dysfunctional bite.

Why is orthodontic treatment so important?

When the teeth are crowded, they are hard to clean properly, which can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, and tooth loss. A “dysfunctional occlusion or bite” can occur when the teeth or jaw and/or lips do not line up properly.Having a dysfunctional  bite can lead to worn tooth surfaces, difficulty speaking and chewing, gum tissue and jaw joint issues, and added stress on the supporting bones. This can result in a bite that doesn’t work effectively,  appears unbalanced, or results in extreme damage or wear to the teeth.

This  can be fixed  using braces or in combination with jaw surgery. Correcting the teeth in this way makes for an efficient, functional bite, as well it always creates an attractive and healthy-looking smile.

Why should children get an orthodontic check-up?

It is recommended by the American Association of Orthodontics (AAO) that children visit their orthodontic by the age of seven. At this age, issues are easier to find and correct early on.

Can adults take advantage of orthodontic treatments?

Around one in five orthodontic patients are aged over eighteen, braces are effective at almost any age. As well, many adults wear their teeth down severely, and as the teeth wear, they erupt to find a new equilibrium position. If these patients want to restore their teeth to proper size and function, they usually need orthodontics to move the teeth back to a position where the teeth were before they wore down and erupted into a different position.

How long does the treatment take?

Orthodontic treatment usually takes between one to three years, plus retention. The retention phase of the treatment is where retainers are used; this occurs once the braces are removed.

What is the price of treatment?

The cost of orthodontic treatment varies depending on the complexity of the problem and the length of treatment needed. The cost of treatment and financing options available will be discussed with your orthodontist before treatment begins.
